Introduction to Mosaic Making
Join artist Helen Miles for this four-week intensive introduction to the world of mosaic. Learn about mosaic tools and materials, cutting techniques and laying methods. Students will work on a small personal project using unglazed ceramic tiles and choose either a house number, pot stand or placemat. The course will take you through all you need to know to make your own direct method mosaic from choosing the design to grouting the completed work. No previous experience is necessary.
Students will learn the fundamentals of mosaic making: which materials to use, different cutting techniques, the basic mosaic tools and adhesives, how to lay the tiles and how to grout. Students will also be advised of health and safety issues with mosaic making. By the end of the four-week course students should be familiar with all the basic rules of mosaic making and have completed one direct method project on a baseboard of their own. Students will also make a second small mosaic on mesh to take home and grout.
